Color Identification

The coating manufacturers have groups of sample panels, called color standards, for each vehicle color. They use these panels to identify acceptable color variances. For example, a green color can vary slightly darker, lighter or bluer and still be accepted as the same color code. The auto manufacturers provide the panels to coating manufacturers for formulation of refinish colors.

Paint/Color Code

Codes made up of letters or numbers for mixing the right type and color paint. Paint codes are listed on the body I.D. plate located on the vehicle. The location of the I.D. plate will vary depending on the manufacturer. Most estimating systems will have links to show you where to obtain paint codes on the vehicle.

Color Directory

A book or binder containing color chips and other paint-related information for most makes and models of vehicles are available.  This will provide direction as to clear coat and 3 stage applications. Most repair facilities have aftermarket refinishing color directories available as well.
