1994-1995 Honda Accord Anti-Lock Brake Modulator Assembly

Recent field claim experience and subsequent research have confirmed that the fluid reservoir of the anti-lock brake modulator assembly on the redesigned 1994-1995 Honda Accord may sustain damage during minor front end impacts. The assembly, Photograph 1A, with its attached reservoir is located on the left side of the engine compartment directly behind the upper tie bar of the radiator support.

Damage may occur if the tie bar contacts the reservoir which is bolted directly to the top of the modulator unit, Photograph 1.

Note: The same ABS reservoir is used on the 1994-95 Acura Integra. If damage occurs in the same manner as on the Accord, the service procedure is the same as on the Accord.

In the case where the damage is confined to the reservoir, American Honda Motor Company services the reservoir separately from the modulator assembly, Photograph 2.

Prior to purchasing the complete assembly, the local dealer should be contacted to verify the availability of the reservoir. The replacement part is furnished as a kit that contains the reservoir, attaching elbow and required seals. The kit carries part number 57019-ST5-000.

A careful examination is required when inspecting a damaged reservoir to ensure that no foreign matter (i.e. broken plastic fragments or other external debris) has entered the modulator, causing subsequent contamination of the brake system.

If contamination is suspected, it is extremely important that proper procedures be followed during replacement of either the reservoir or the entire modulator assembly.

Installation of the replacement reservoir and subsequent bleeding of the anti-lock brake system, which is somewhat involved, should only be performed by a qualified technician or Honda dealer service personnel.
